Additional information about Mahdia
Set on a narrow peninsula and tucked away like a jewel between Sousse and Sfax, this port modestly conceals its prestigious and illustrious past. In fact, charming, friendly and relaxed Mahdia offers a fascinating glimpse of Tunisian life. The main attraction is its old 'medina', the entrance to which is through an enormous 16th century gate. Here you'll find leatherware, silver, birdcages, carpets and hand crafted products, and make sure you don't miss the covered souk where you can haggle for bargains. From the medina's main cobbled street, Rue Ali Bey, you can walk to picturesque Place du Caire and relax at one of the cafes. Look out for the ornate arched doorway and octagonal minaret on the southern side of the square, which belongs to the 16th century Mosque. If you continue east on the Rue Ali Bey the Great Mosque rises into view, and past that is the 16th century fortress, which stands on the highest point of the peninsula. Outside the Medina, Mahdia is a working port with good value restaurants. Nightlife is low-key and centers on the hotels which offer bars and entertainment.
