Kruger National Park is South Africa's largest game reserve - about the same size as Wales. It is a collection of reserves, some that were first set aside for the preservation of game in 1903, and were later grouped together and named after Paul Kruger, an early leader and politician. There are six different eco systems in the park, ranging from bushveld to scrub to forest, and in total is home to almost 2,000 species of plants, over 500 types of birds, and protects almost 150 species of mammals. Visitors come to see 'The Big Five' - lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and buffalo, and the park is considered one of the best places on earth for photographing Africa's big cats.
